Alex Hewitt, founder of NetIDme, commented: “With recent high profile cases worldwide, it is clear that Internet predators & cyber-bullies are potential problems that all parents must face up to. By producing this video, our aim is to help raise parental awareness of the issues”.
NetIDme has also developed ChatShield, a free parental control tool for Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger). ChatShield automatically checks all instant messaging (IM) contacts against the NetIDme identity verification service, and simply stops any unidentifiable messages from getting through. Parents can download ChatShield for free from the ChatShield website – www.chatshield.com
Safer Internet Day is taking place on 12 February 2008 with participants from almost 40 countries across the world. There are a number of activities planned for the day with the aim of celebrating safer internet use and raising awareness of the online risks that the web can pose to children. In the UK, school children will be taking part by participating in the 2008 Blogathon along with 50 other countries.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre is asking teachers to take 15 minutes to run creative and innovative school assemblies dedicated specifically for young people aged between 8-10 and 11-16 years old. These assemblies are available for download from the ThinkUKnow website: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/teachers.
